A Trip to Sand Creek Secondary School

The beautiful students of Sand Creek Secondary sat down to watch the debate.

I had the honor of visiting Sand Creek Secondary School during my stint as an English teacher at St. Ignatius Secondary School in the Rupununi Savannahs of Guyana, South America in September, 2016.

As you may have heard, the Rupununi Savannahs of Guyana is a vast territory of rainforest, wildlife, and natural grasslands. At that time, I was taking a group of debaters from St. Ignatius Secondary School for a debate against Sand Creek Secondary School.

What struck me most about Sand Creek Village though, was not the beautiful streams with clear running water, or the natural grasslands and mountains, but the beautiful, friendly, and welcoming people. One of the female teachers was a bull rider who participated in the famous Rupununi Rodeo! And she invited me to go horse riding with her whenever I chose to come back. I told her that I didn’t know how to ride, but she offered to teach me!

Did I mention that the climate is hot in Sand Creek? Yes, but what I saw during the lunch time would amaze anyone. Instead of running for shade, some of the children ran out during lunch time onto the mountaintop and sat down right there in the full blast of the sun to have a hearty lunch. It seemed as though they couldn’t even feel the heat. Yes, people adapt to their environment so well. Here in the midday sun, eating their lunch, these kids were right at home! I guess this is called “acclimatization!” And this is one of the wonders of nature and our world that I have observed during my travels.

Now, enjoy these amazing photos from in and around Sand Creek Village.
