Shell Beach is a magnificent and breathtaking tourist attraction and recreational spot located in Region 1, Guyana, South America.
Shell beach is an area that brings together rich biodiversity. Its pristine ecosystems are the nesting site of four of the eight species of sea turtles: the olive ridley, the hawksbill, the green, and the leatherback. These four magnificent species of sea turtles were declared endangered due to poaching and plastic pollution of ocean waters.
Located on the Atlantic facade, Shell Beach stretches over 140 kilometers. Its mangrove forests are a habitat to more than 50 varieties of fish species. The beautiful marshes and sandy beaches are home to 200 species of shoreline and migratory birds, Caribbean flamingos, West Indian manatees, Guyanese dolphins, and jaguars.
Shell Beach also provides livelihoods for indigenous communities who protect and preserve this area. The name “Shell” was given because of the presence of fragmented shellfish on the shores of Shell Beach.
