Replete with placid lakes and watered by the Rupununi River, it is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. Guyana’s national flower, the Victoria Regia, grows abundantly in the waterways of Yupukari Village. Giant anteaters are often seen gracing the scenic savannah landscape, and the black caiman rule the Rupununi River that runs through the village. Satellite villages include Fly Hill, Quatata, and Kaicumbay.
In the year 2019, I made a trip to Yupukari Village. At that time, I was invited by one of the founders of the Caiman House Eco Lodge to teach a computer course. During my two week stay at the Caiman House Eco Lodge, I observed the culture of the people of Yupukari while exploring the beauty and wonders of this remote paradise.
How to Get to Yupukari Village
From Ogle, I took a Trans Guyana Airways plane to Lethem, Region 9. The flight took about one and a half hours. At the Lethem airport, I was picked up by a taxi driver who took me into Yupukari Village.
The road to Yupukari Village is rough and challenging, especially in the rainy season. It took approximately four hours to reach the Caiman House Eco Lodge from Lethem…traveling over a distance of about 60 miles of unfriendly terrain. At present, poorly developed infrastructure and high cost of inland transportation make Yupukari Village a lightly frequented tourism destination.
While in Yupukari Village, I learned the story of the black Caiman, an endangered species which has been the subject of several scientific studies by American Universities.
The mythical city of Eldorado is believed to be close to Yupukari Village. During an afternoon outing, tour guide Howard Barnabas showed me the remnants of a British fort where the British and Portuguese were believed to have had a military standoff during the search for Eldorado city. Thankfully, the tensions resolved without escalation into war.
The people of Yupukari Village are friendly and peaceful. Crime is almost nonexistent. The atmosphere is peaceful and free of noise and other pollution.
