The main road cuts through the center of the town and is also called “main street.” The section of New Amsterdam towards the west of the main road is colloquially called “waterside” – meaning it is nearer to the waters of the Berbice river; and to the east of the main road is called “back dam side,” meaning it is closer to the cane fields in the “back dam.”
Some prominent businesses in the town of New Amsterdam include the Church View International Hotel, the Demico House, the Bank of Nova Scotia, and Fogarty’s.
