Hundreds of miles south of the town of Lethem, a small community of Indigenous People live peacefully and happily. In the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, in the Deep South Rupununi Savannahs of Guyana, South America, at the headwaters of the mighty Essequibo River, is tucked away this beautiful piece of paradise – Masakanari Village, also known as Gunns Village.

The village of Masakanari is home to about 350 to 400 people of the Wai Wai Tribe of Amerindians of Guyana, South America. They survive mainly by fishing, hunting, and farming. As a result, the remote indigenous village of “Masakanari” in the Deep South Rupununi Savannahs is also commonly referred to as “Wai Wai Country.”

Masakanari Village, also popularly called “Gunns,” has a trail link to neighbouring Suriname that takes several days traversing across the dense jungle.
