I’ve decided to create a special “commentaries” section of the Guyana, South America website for commentaries related to issues and developments in Guyana.

A commentary is an informed piece of writing, for example, on an issue related to or affecting Guyana. A commentary is distinguished from a “letter to the editor” but some letters to the editors may also be commentary.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to categorize which articles to put under “letter to the editor” and which to put under commentary. Let’s put it this way. A letter to the editor usually seeks to rally support or effect change on an issue while a commentary discusses an issue from various angles without seeking to change anything. Moreover, commentaries are usually written by in-house staff while letters to the editors are usually written by fans of the publication or the general public.

Nevertheless, we admit that there is often a thin line between articles filed under “commentary” and articles filed under “letters to the editor” in GSA News. Nevertheless, we will use or discretion to the best of our abilities.
