Last updated: April 2, 2025 at 22:16 pmAmid growing government persecution against the backdrop of crippling US Sanctions, speculations have started to rise amongst the general Guyanese population as to whether the famous Mohameds of Georgetown might relocate to a foreign country. In Mid-2024, the Mohameds were sanctioned by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), putting a spoke in the wheel of many of their business operations locally. However, things got worse when the government, with whom the Mohameds were, at one point in time, closely connected, distanced themselves. And just when you think things can’t get any worse, it does! It appears as thought the Mohameds have come under political persecution due to the apparent aspirations of Azzrudin Mohamed to become a political leader.

Recently, a government aligned publication has been lashing out at the Mohameds in what can be interpreted as a smear campaign, although much of the “news” posted about the businessmen by the said publication were somewhat factual. Since the US Sanctions on the Mohameds, their gold dealer license has been revoked. Their security firm license has reportedly been canceled and firearms seized. Further, the Guyana Revenue Authority announced that it is seeking 900 million Guyana dollars in alleged arrears for under-declared automobile imports.
In a recent Facebook Post, the senior Mohamed, Nazar, told the public that the sanctions have affected their lives and businesses dramatically. He also speculated that the government in power might be planning an assassination attempt on his son, Azzrudin Mohamed.
Azzrudin Mohamed has recently been parading around the country in public outreaches which might be construed as political campaigns, and a large fraction of the Guyanese population have been voicing their opinion that he should contest the upcoming national elections. However, given the US Sanctions and the fact that A. Mohamed possesses little knowledge, qualifications, or experience prerequisite to becoming a political leader, this might be easier said than done.
In the face of US Sanctions and local government persecution however, it would appear as though the Mohameds’ surest way of rebounding is to leverage their popularity and seek political office. If they succeed, their victory would be overwhelming, but a loss in such a move would prove equally devastating. Are the Mohameds really willing to take such a colossal risk? After all, despite their nationwide popularity, winning the elections under the current circumstances is a daunting task that would require a herculean effort, and one from which most men would shrink.
All of these developments have led persons to speculate that the Mohamed’s might be planning to abandon Guyana. After all, they speculatively still have enough time and money to tactfully migrate their wealth abroad and seek political asylum on foreign shores. The Mohameds speculatively have enough money to establish business and commerce in any foreign nation, and many countries might be willing to welcome them on the grounds of political asylum.
Despite all this, the Mohamed’s next move remain a mystery at this point. Will they stay and seek political office? Will they remain and continue business as usual in Guyana in the hopes that the raging storm will eventually subside? Or will they migrate their assets and start a new life on foreign shores? Only time will tell.
