The Rupununi River is one of the main tributaries of the Essequibo River. Did you know that the word “Rupununi” is derived from “rapon”? Rapon is the Makushi word for a black bellied whistling duck found along the Rupununi River in Guyana, South America.

Makushi is an Amerindian Language spoken by the Makushi tribe or sub-tribe of Amerindians.
