Last updated: April 5, 2025 at 15:45 pmAuthorities from the Guyana Revenue Authority this morning showed up at the home of Georgetown businessman Azzrudin Mohamed, presented their credentials, and informed Mohamed that they came to seize several luxury vehicles on account of underpaid taxes. However, they received an unpleasant surprise as scores of irate persons charged in their direction, jumping and shouting words of support for Mohamed, and impeding the movement of the GRA officials. On the scene was well-known local journalist, Travis Chase, who interviewed Mr. Azzrudin Mohamed, the protestors, and the GRA officials. However, the GRA officials declined to make any comment.
Mohamed told Travis Chase that the PPP/C government is targeting him because of his perceived political ambition and popular support from the Guyanese public, and questioned why the GRA has decided to seize these vehicles now when they were imported legally into the country four years ago. GRA had notified the Mohameds of their intention to seize a number of luxury vehicles for alleged under-declaration of value, but the Mohameds say they are challenging the move through the court, and therefore GRA cannot seize the vehicles.
Apparently, the Mohameds were made aware of the GRA’s plan to arrive at his home this morning (5th of April, 2025), and had notified their support base who were already inside the yard of the Mohameds when the officials arrived, and who rushed out in peaceful protest against the GRA officials. They shouted slogans such as, “Mohamed for President,” “Bharrat must go,” and “leave our president (Mohamed) alone.”
Azzrudin Mohamed told Travis Chase that the vehicles entered the country legally and were signed off by top officials, whose name he said will shortly release via his Facebook Page, Team Mohamed’s. He claimed that the government is persecuting him and his family for political reasons since they see him as a threat in the upcoming national elections. The younger Mohamed neither admitted nor denied having an intention to contest the upcoming elections.
Eventually, the GRA officials were forced to leave without the vehicles. However, it is not clear if they returned, backed by the Guyana Police Force. However, there were images posted subsequently by Guyana Daily News showing police vehicles and members of the Guyana Police Force at the home of the Mohameds shortly after the episode described above.
