Heroes – a Poem by Ronald J. Daniels

After the tragic death of 5 GDF officers on a mission to Region 7 near to the border with Venezuela, many Guyanese have written tributes, and some performed songs, in honor of their sacrifice. In this poem, prominent Guyanese legal professional, author, and poet, Mr. Ronald J. Daniels, pens a heartwarming poem in honor of the five who tragically died as well as the two who survived the helicopter crash on that fateful day of December 7, 2023.

Poetry: The Last Day the Black Man is Oppressed by Ronald J. Daniels

Mr. Ronald J. Daniels is a Guyanese born Attorney of Law and poet, among other things. He is generally very vocal on the historical oppression of the African race. European slavery of Africans in Guyana ended in 1838. On the 1st of August each year, the abolition of slavery, a national holiday, is celebrated in the form of Emancipation Day. In this poem, Mr. Daniels expresses his sentiments on slavery and subsequent emancipation.

While many indigenous persons leave their natural communities and venture into more industrialized zones, taking up jobs and even owning businesses, indigenous peoples in their natural environment only consume what they need to survive and live comfortably. Unlike other ethnic groups in Guyana, the indigenous peoples value the preservation of the natural environment above the creation of wealth or the promise of money.
