Statement by the US Embassy Guyana

SOUTHCOM WILL CONDUCT FLYOVER EXERCISE OVER GUYANA

Today, at 2:00 pm, with collaboration and approval from the Government of Guyana, two U.S. Navy aircraft, F/A-18F Super Hornets, embarked on the USS George Washington, will conduct a Guyana Defence Force-coordinated and approved flyover of Georgetown and its surrounding areas.

Members of the public are advised that this exercise builds upon our routine security cooperation and bilateral defense partnership with Guyana. As part of its worldwide defense mission, U.S. Navy vessels routinely transit international waters all over the world conducting similar exercises and exchanges with partners and allies.

This move comes in the face of growing Venezuelan aggression in its claim of the Essequibo. This publication has been reliably informed that the Venezuelan military is currently constructing a bridge which will link Ankoko Island to the Essequibo.

Earlier today, the United States Embassy in Guyana via its Facebook Page:

As part of the United States and Guyana’s continuing military-to-military partnership, the U.S. Southern Command Strategy, Policy, and Plans Director Major General Julie Nethercot met with Guyana Defence Force Chief of Staff Brigadier Khan to discuss on-going security cooperation and security assistance initiatives between the U.S. and Guyana.

The United States is committed to working with the Government of Guyana and key stakeholders to advance the shared goal of a strong, peaceful, and prosperous Guyana and a powerful, capable national defense force.
