Team Mohamed’s refers to a father/son duo, and by extension their families and businesses, which is branded as a “sports team” based in Georgetown, Region 4, Guyana, South America. However, the Mohameds, especially the younger Azzrudin Mohamed, is famous across the entire country of Guyana for their repeated, sizeable, and well applauded acts of charity to Guyanese in less favorable circumstances. These include funding businesses from scratch and building comfortable, beautiful homes for families from the ground up, and apparently with no strings attached. Team Mohameds is widely considered Guyana’s biggest charitable group.
On the evening of February 6th, 2025, I was alarmed to see a Facebook Post by a popular Guyanese news outlet, Guyana Daily News, stating that Team Mohamed’s will be distributing cash grants of $100,000.00 GYD to 1000 Guyanese on the 7th of February, 2025 starting at 7:00 AM. The post encouraged Guyanese to show up at the gates and doors of the Mohameds as early as 7:00 AM on February 7th so as to be amongst the first 1000 persons who would receive the cash grants. See post here (if it was not subsequently deleted).
The first 1000 people to come to our office in Lombard Street, Georgetown, tomorrow (Friday, February 7, 2025), at 07:00 am, will receive $100,000 each. (Extracted from Guyana Daily News).
The screenshots below show the post made by Guyana Daily News on the evening of February 6th, 2025.
Within three hours, the post garnered over 200 shares, over 800 positive reactions, and over 170 comments. Most people reading the post, which are likely to amount into the hundreds of thousands, appear to have taken it as face value, believing the statement to be true. Take a look at some of the comments below.
Most of the reactions were thumbs up and hearts, suggesting that most people who read the post believed it to be true.
Is it Really True?
This publication was unable to make contact with the Mohameds to verify the authenticity of the claim which was labeled a “Paid Advertisement” by Guyana Daily News. However, we wish to advise all Guyanese citizens that this post is MOST LIKELY TO BE A HOAX for the following reasons:
There was NO SUCH announcement on the Facebook Page of Team Mohamed’s up to midnight of the evening of February 6th, 2025. If the Mohameds were to make such an announcement, they are likely to have made it on their own Facebook Page.
It is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT and IMPRACTICAL to distribute monies to 1000 people within an 8 to 12 hour period.
Further, the post made on the Guyana Daily News publication is an extension of a post made by Team Mohamed’s which does not mention anything about cash grant. See a screenshot of Team Mohamed’s post below.
Totally Irresponsible
If this post is untrue, and most likely it is, then it is a reflection of total irresponsibility by this once reputable news agency. It is confusing as to why such a well-established news outlet would carry out such an elaborate hoax on its loyal followers and the general Guyanese population by extension. This act could incur several legal consequences in addition to the mayhem it might cause on Lombard Street, Georgetown on the morning of February 7. It’s not April 1st yet!
Most people who read the post appeared to have swallowed the bait, hook, line, and sinker!
But Why?
This publication is of the opinion that the post is a hoax, so the question here arises: why would one of Guyana’s most trusted news outlet carry out such a hoax on the people of Guyana? Well, the Mohameds, who were recently sanctioned by the US government for alleged gold smuggling and tax evasion, appears to have been at loggerheads with the ruling PPP/C government for a number of years. Further, the Mohameds have been growing in popularity with many calling on Azzrudin to run for the Presidency. Azzrudin Mohamed in a recent Facebook Video called out the government for being slothful in completing its recent distribution of $100,000.00 cash grants to citizens over the age of 18 years in Guyana. This post, then, might have been a government sponsored “lash back” on the Mohameds.
Conclusion
This publication does not know for sure, but we have reason to believe the post referenced above is false and misleading. We advise all Guyanese to seek clarity from the Mohameds through some other source before rushing to the office at Lombard Street tomorrow morning!
