Where there’s a will, there’s a way…

Did you know…that in the country of Guyana, South America, they sometimes use a tractor and trailer to move a wooden house from one location to another? This happens when the owner of the house wants to sell the house but not the land, and they find a corresponding buyer.

Skilled men, using sophisticated techniques and brute force, dislodge the house from its posts so that it rests flush on top of the trailer. The trailer then moves at a snail’s pace from the place of origin to its destination. On the way, workers sit on top of the house in case they need to lift electrical wires out of the way. The tractor and trailer with the wooden house on top usually occupies the entire road forcing cars and other vehicles to negotiate a path at the corner.

Whether the structural integrity of the wooden house is compromised during this transition is another question. It’s likely that such operations could weaken some parts of the house and even cause minor breakage. However, people continue to do it somewhat successfully.

The practice of moving wooden houses using a tractor and trailer is most common in the county of Berbice.
