Police in Region 9 are investigating a tragic incident which resulted in the death of a Region 9 teenaged girl yesterday, 4th of September, 2023. The victim is identified as 17-year old Bella Douglas of Sand Creek village, South Central Rupununi, a student who had written her CXC exams this year passing with good grades. The incident occurred at around 08:45 am at a culvert along the Sand Creek Village main access road.
According to a source familiar with the incident, Bella was in a tractor trailer heading to Shulinab Village for football games when the incident occurred. One person said that the girl sat at the extreme rear part of the trailer, and that she was asked to move to the front, but refused.
After falling from the trailer, Bella was rushed to the Sand Creek Health Centre and was attended to immediately by medical professionals who tried their best to save her life. Unfortunately, she died while receiving treatment.
The police was informed and a team of police arrived at the Sand Creek Health Centre and took statements from the persons who were in the tractor trailer when the incident occurred. The driver of the tractor trailer was placed in custody and taken to the Lethem Police station. He was driving without a license. The body of the late Bella Douglas was taken to Lethem by the police where it awaits post mortem examinations.
