Visit Surama: Reunite With Nature

Surama Village is a unique tapestry of a natural rainforest setting intertwined with human civilization. It is home to the Macushi Amerindian Tribe of Guyana, South America. The Surama Eco Lodge can be found in Surama Village. The Surama Eco Lodge was listed as one of the best hotels in Guyana, Venezuela, and Colombia in the year 2011 by National Geographic. In the same year, it was the joint winner of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Award, along with Harrison’s Cave in Barbados.

Escape the ordinary. Go somewhere you’ve never been before. Go to Surama Village!

Surama village is a small Amerindian community of the Makushi people living in the North Rupununi Savannahs in Region 9. The word Surama, originally, “SHURAMATA,” means the place of spoiled Bar-B-Que (or where Bar-B-Que spoiled). The name is said to have been coined during a tribal conflict between the Makushi and Carib many, many years ago. Surama village is situated in 5 sqare miles of savannah land, surrounded by forest, hills, and mountains of the Pakariama mountain range. The life of the people is in the art and understanding of how to live with nature. It is a simple and basic way of life, living according to the laws of nature.
