Berbice, known as the Ancient County, is one of the three counties of Guyana, South America. Berbice is beautiful, and I say that from a very personal perspective. I was born in the county of Berbice, and I’ve spent a good part of my life there. Berbice holds a special place in my heart, and it always will: it will always be home to me.

The Amatur Bus Service had first announced in 2019 that they were going to start their service in Guyana in November 2019. However, as we predicted, due to the bad state of the trail and some other bureaucratic factors, their launch has been postponed. A tornado is a funnel of rapidly spinning air, or, in other words, we can say that a tornado is a violently rotating column of air. Tornadoes form during thunderstorms when warm, humid air collides with cold, dry air. Sometimes, a tornado may not reach the ground, and form instead a funnel cloud. If you see a funnel cloud, know that you run potentially near to the way of an impending tornado.

Police have a difficult task: contending with bandits, murderers, thieves, and lawbreakers and troublemakers in general. Consequently, they are trained to be tough, to handle offensive weapons, and to survive under dangerous circumstances. In light of this, the general civilian population whom the police are paid to protect and serve must offer a high level of cooperation to the police. If the police are completely stripped of the respect which the uniform should naturally carry, then there will be an inevitable breakdown of law and order in the country.
Funnel clouds are powerfully and violently rotating columns of air which may turn into tornadoes if they touch the ground. It turns out that the funnel cloud did touch the ground and turn into a tornado on the 22nd of May, 2022. However, we only received this update yesterday, 24th of May, 2022.

Living conditions in the country of Syria are difficult even for ordinary Syrian nationals – who regularly flee the country seeking refuge on foreign shores. You can imagine then how much more difficult it will be for foreign nationals living in refugee camps of that country – whose lives are in constant danger every day. The living conditions of the Syrian refugee camps such as Al Roj in northern Syria can be described as “inhumane,” and the faster we empty those refugee camps, the better it will be for Syria and the world.
Stories of paranormal activities such as suspected demonic attacks are not uncommon in Region 9 and have been going on for years, perhaps decades. The stories are prolific in boarding schools where students live in dorms. Numerous persons have reported that the students of these schools, especially those who live in the dorms, regularly come under what they believe are demonic attacks.
On Wednesday, 8th of June, 2022, during the registration period at around 8 am, a group of female students of Aishalton Secondary in the Deep South Rupununi started to scream in a frightening manner. At first, the students in the other rooms thought it was some sort of classroom activity, but then a number of girls from forms 1, 2, and 3 ran out of their classroom and started to scream and shout something to the effect that someone is coming for them. They started to jump over walls and fences, and roll on the ground. There were screams all over the school compound.

Guyana Defense Force’s Captain Kaya Dover on 26th of June, 2022, made history by being the first men to swim across the Essequibo River, a distance of about 3 miles, in complete military uniform. Dover pulled off the daring stunt with his military uniform, including boots, which put an extra six pounds on his body and greatly increased the drag created by the water caught inside his uniform.
The actions of two Guyanese men on a dangerous cliff of a waterfall in Region 7, Guyana, South America, has caught the world’s attention. The video, which was first posted in 2018 by Leon Mendonca, and reposted by the Guyana, South America Facebook Page in 2022, was viewed by more 800,000 people so far, and it is going viral.

Up to July, 2022, the Victoria Amazonica had boasted the title of the world’s largest water lily. However, a new water lily, called the Victoria Boliviana, has blown the Victoria Amazonica out the water and taken its spot as the world’s largest water lily.
A ten-year-old indigenous girl has written a poem highlighting a worrying social issue. The poem is so profound, insightful, inspiring, and beautifully written that the reader has a hard time believing it was written by a ten-year-old.
During a State House event in July, 2022, President Ali boasted about the immense benefits that the Government’s Gas to Energy Project will bring to the citizens of Guyana, South America. The President explained how the Gas to Energy Project will reduce cost of living for citizens of Guyana, saving them collectively an estimated GY$27 billion annually which can be used for other commodities or savings.
Guyana’s First Lady, Arya Ali, was on the 12th of July, 2022 presented with a portrait of herself created by Guyanese artist, Compton Babb. The announcement was made by the First Lady via her Facebook Page. A prominent Guyanese citizen, Mr. Frank Satnarine, described a harrowing experience of being robbed at gunpoint in the capital city of Georgetown on the evening of Saturday, 23rd of July, 2022 at around 10:30 PM. These types of gunpoint robberies, perpetuated by youths on bicycles, are unfortunately not uncommon in Guyana, but are poorly reported upon, and even more poorly addressed by the Guyana Police Force. Guyanese, and foreigners visiting Guyana, are left at the mercy of these robbers who carry out their attacks as though it were a full time job, both in the day and night.
The Caribbean Court of Justice, Guyana’s final appellate court, has, on the 19th of August, 2022, lost credibility as an independent and impartial instrument of justice when Justice Denys Barrow sent murder convict, Jarvis Small, walking out of the courtroom a free man.
The archaic 100 windows house located at No. 19 village is a relic of colonial rule in Guyana, South America. The gigantic structure has been there for perhaps a century, and needless to say, has fascinated the general Guyanese population. A Guyanese resident of Mon Repos Village, Region 4, Guyana, South America has captured a very unusual and mysterious phenomenon with the sun as seen from above his home in Guyana. Mr. Khemraj Khelawan related to this publication that he was fixing his antenna on the 1st of October, 2022, at around 12:00 noon when he noticed something unusual with the overhead sun. Khelawan said he saw what looked like a ball of fire coming out of the sun, making a half-circle around the sun and then giving off a flare.
A heartwarming video showing President Ali’s son interacting with another kid at a Quick Serv location in Georgetown has gone viral and touched the hearts of countless people. The video, posted below, shows President Ali’s son feeding ice cream to a little girl, who is complete stranger to him, in the presence of her parents. Many people have lauded the anecdote as promoting love and unity amongst Guyanese people.
Tails of Hope is an animal shelter and animal rights group operating in Guyana. Tails of Hope is committed to promoting animal health care awareness, offering professional advice, educational tools, rescue aids, and housing to protect animals and to prevent animal cruelty. As we all know, fireworks are not especially friendly to dogs and other animals. In the interest of animals everywhere, the organization has issued a friendly message to all Guyanese of the hazards of fireworks, including its damaging effects on animals.
Earlier this year (January, 2022), we had written a story about a Guyanese woman who is trapped in a Syrian Refugee camp with her two children, and who is appealing to the government of Guyana to repatriate her. On the 17th of September, 2022, residents of Region 7, Guyana, South America reported that ice rained down from the skies over an extensive area across the Region. A resident of Kamarang, Veronica Clement, pulled out her mobile phone and made a video showing the ice pellets falling near to her home. You can see this and other videos of the hailstorm here.
On September, 17th, 2022, ice rained down from the skies of Guyana over Kamarang Village in Region 7, Guyana, South America. The phenomenon is known as a hailstorm, and while it is indeed a rare one, it is not the only time this happened. There have been several reports of hailstorms in Guyana over the years, most of which came from Regions 7 and 9.

This morning, President Irfaan Ali handed over to 85-year-old Meena Bafan, the keys to her newly rebuilt home at Herstelling East Bank Demerara. The home was rebuilt by the Men on Mission (MoM) after the President saw its state during an outreach in late November. Men on Mission is a brainchild of President Irfaan Ali that engages Guyanese men in productive tasks across the country that helps the less fortunate.
The Cuffy Statue, also called the 1763 Monument, is a national monument of Guyana that was erected in honor of rebel slave “Cuffy.” Variations of the spelling include Coffy, Kofi, and Koffi. The location where the monument has been erected is called “The Square of the Revolution.”
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is one of the biggest and most auspicious festivals celebrated by Hindus in Guyana and around the world. The five-day long festival starts with Dhanteras and culminates with Bhai Dooj. Diwali marks the start of the Hindu New Year. The date of Diwali, which is determined by the position of the moon, changes each year, but usually falls somewhere between October and November.
In Guyana, South America, Phagwah is known as the festival of colors. Although of East Indian and Hindu origin, the celebration of Phagwah in Guyana is a national holiday which is celebrated by Guyanese of all races, classes, and religions. During the morning, buckets of water are used to drench one another, while in the afternoon, colored powders are dabbed and sprinkled on friends, and colored water is sprayed using a “water gun.”
Guyanese celebrate fifteen national holidays each year. Of these, 9 are religious holidays attributed to one of the three major religions (Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam) while 6 are non-religious.
There was an alleged shooting incident which occurred at the State House (southern guard hut) on Carmichael Street at about 07:30 hrs this morning (Thursday 15th December, 2022). Investigation revealed that on the date and time mentioned, a security detail was on duty at south eastern guard hut adjacent to Carmichael Street when a male of mixed race ethnicity confronted the security stating: “I want the President.”
A man allegedly made an attempt at President Ali’s life this morning, Thursday, 15th of December, 2022. He reportedly fired several shots towards the President’s House after stabbing a security detail and retrieving his gun. In this video, the shooter is being arrested. Apparently, he was hit by police fire.

From ever since he knew himself, Tauseef had a passion for singing, and he explains that this passion was greatly helped and encouraged by his uncle, Akbar Khan, who opened a music shop in the same village within close proximity to his home when the lad was just 7 or 8 years old. Tauseef seized the opportunity to go over often to his uncle’s music shop and listen to music as well as hone his singing skills through practice. He related that his uncle, Akbar Khan, who is also an excellent singer, was very supportive of his dream of becoming a professional singer, and helped him to become a better singer.
The murder of Shonette Dover will go down as one of the most brutal, heinous, and cold-blooded murders ever committed on a Guyanese citizen by someone she once loved and trusted. The species of freshwater fish, Hoplias Aimara, is known in Guyana as the haimara or wolf fish. In other parts of the world, it is called anjumara, traira, trahira, manjuma, anjoemara, and wolf fish. The haimara is a freshwater fish which grows to more than 4 feet in length, but the average length is 3 feet. It weighs on average 88 lbs. The haimara is native to northern South American countries including Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, French Guiana, and Suriname. It is also found in the rivers of neighboring Trinidad and Tobago.
The tarpon may be described as a “euryhaline species” because it can survive in a wide variety of salinity and therefore lives in both the ocean and in fresh waters. The tarpon breeds mostly in the oceans in salt water. The females can lay up to 12 million eggs at once. They spawn their eggs between the months of March and July. Tarpons tend to swim upriver from the ocean and often inhabit rivers, creeks, tidal pools, and salt marshes. Some return to the ocean but others stay in freshwater locations.
The ocelot is a mammal native to the North, South, and Central Americas as well as the Caribbean Islands of Trinidad and Margarita. Ocelots are carnivores meaning they eat other animals. Since it prefers to hunt during the night, the ocelot is described as a nocturnal animal.
The giant river otter is only found South America, and Guyana is one of the countries in which it is found. Each giant river otter has a signature mark on its throat: the pattern at the bottom of the throat is different for each giant otter so you can tell one from the other. This helps scientists to keep track of the number of giant otters present in a particular location.
Leptophis ahaetulla, called Parrot Snake or Lora, is a venomous and dangerous serpent found in various parts of Guyana, especially the Rupununi Savannahs. The species is also found in many other countries across South and Central Americas.
The hydrolycus armatus, or payara, is a predatory fish that preys on smaller fishes. It uses its sharp fangs to impale preys. The payara can grow to up to 1 meter in length. The hydrolycus armatus is often confused with its smaller cousin which only grows up to 1.7 feet, the hydrolycus scomberoides, also called payara and vampire fish.
The peacock bass fish is colloquially called Luckanani by the people of Guyana, South America. It belongs to the genus cichia. In Brazil, the peacock bass is called tucanare, and the Spanish refer to it as pavon.
Guyana is known as the land of the giants, and the giant anteater, the world’s largest anteater, is one of the six or seven reasons why. The giant anteater goes by the scientific name Myrmecophaga tridactyla. It is a mammal which feeds on insects and has an average lifespan of 14 years. About two to three feet in height, the giant anteater weighs between 40 and 140 pounds. The giant anteater can reach as long as eight feet from the tip of its snout to the end of its tail.
The electric eel is living proof of a fact we all know: that God invented electricity long before humans discovered it. The electric eel is a natural marvel which produces electricity through bodily functions. It can electrocute other animals, but is never affected by the electrical shocks it delivers.
The flower of Victoria Amazonica, previously called the Victoria Regia, and also known as the Giant Water Lily is Guyana’s National Flower. Victoria Amazonica is the world’s second largest water lily with its leaves measuring a whooping 10 feet in diameter floating on the surface of the water. The stalk of the Victoria Amazonica extends as much as 26 feet (8 meters) below the surface of the water. The flower of the Victoria Amazonica, which it bears almost every week during the summer months, is also the largest flower in the world. The flower of the Victoria Amazonica stays in blossom for just two to three days – long enough to facilitate pollination.
The green anaconda is a species of reptiles found throughout South America including Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Brazil. The species is especially prolific in the northern part of Brazil. In Guyana, the Green Anaconda was spotted by photographer Keanu Thomas in the wetlands of the Essequibo Coast where these photos were taken.
