… REGION 1 CERTIFIED COXSWAIN WITH 14+ YEARS EXPERIENCE

Mahindra Kanaya joined the Guyana Police Force on April 4, 2003. He joined Division # 1 (Barima-Waini) on June 20, 2017. He would have completed his first Coxswain Course in 2006. In 2008, he completed a seaman course with the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and is licensed as a Grade 3 seaman.
In addition to his native language, English, Corporal Kanaya is also versed in the Spanish Language and as such, he assists the Division in translating if the need arises since Region 1 serves as a border to neighbouring Venezuela.
Prior to serving in Region 1, Corporal Kanaya who boasts over 17 years of service also worked at the Annai, Karasabai, Kurupung, Mahdia, Bartica, Sherima, Orinduik and Kurupukari Police Stations/Outposts.
Kanaya also worked at several border locations which includes Lethem, Eteringbang and Imbetero. Kanaya in an interview with this publication noted that his journey as a policeman was filled with ups and downs but nevertheless he thanked everyone responsible for making him reach this far.
The Corporal said that during his career his best experience was while working in Regions 8 and 9: having the privilege to visit remote areas, interacting with the Indigenous and learning their languages and lifestyles. He however noted that the life of a Coxswain is never an easy one but instead a focused and humbled one adding that during his 14+ years as a Coxswain he would have encountered many challenges having to travel almost days, encountering falls and rapids to arrive at locations while executing duties.
