Although the riots and lootings or Tuesday, 28th of June, 2022 have a much deeper root, an article published by a local news outlet, Guyana Daily News, might have helped to trigger the unrest. According to President Ali, and several other credible sources, Guyana Daily News hastily published an article stating that Quindon Bacchus’ killer was released from custody. They did not bother to verify the authenticity of the information and it turned out to the false or misleading.

The police subsequently issued a statement that Quindon Bacchus’ killer is still under arrest, and Guyana Daily News subsequently retracted the article and offered an apology.

Politically motivated trouble-makers in both Guyana and overseas may have capitalized on the false report to help instigate violence and unrest using the race card. Nevertheless, the desire to commit works of destruction on the Guyanese people is the underlying cause of the riots.
