Last updated: May 8, 2022 at 11:58 amAt least 18 people have been confirmed dead and 64 injured after a gas explosion at a Hotel in the Island of Cuba at around 11:AM on the morning of Friday, May 6th, 2022. The explosion was caused by a crack in a hose which occurred during the transfer of liquefied gas from a truck into Hotel Saratoga which is located near Calle Dragones and Paseo de Marti. At least thirteen people have been reported missing, and it is unclear at this point how many remain unaccounted for.
The explosion has resulted in the partial collapse of the hotel and has damaged several other buildings and vehicles nearby. Authorities rushed to evacuate nearly buildings as a precautionary measure. One school which was damaged from the blast was also evacuated this morning.
Cuban citizens from all over the country rushed to donate blood, engage in search and rescue operations, and render whatever assistance they could.
