British explorer, Lucy Shepherd, has set out on a daring expedition in the jungles of Guyana, South America. She and her team are on a mission to cross 200 km of thick, dense jungles from East to West of the Kanuku Mountains in the Rupununi Savannahs – a task that has never been attempted before – to the best of our knowledge.
These jungle covered mountains are big, wild, and mostly unexplored making it clear why no one has attempted, let alone completed this journey before.
The journey through the jungle is expected to last about two months, and is presently nearing it’s end, having been started in early October, 2021. Throughout the 200 km expedition, Lucy and her team will cross the paths of the jungles wildest, most dangerous creatures, trekking and camping out in turns through terrain and waterways that no man has dared to thread before.
On the 1st of October, 2021, the journey began with a 4-wheel drive vehicle and then a small wooden boat that took the team to their start point on the Essequibo river. From there, the team started their daring expedition west on foot.
Throughout the expedition, the team has handrailed the Rupununi River. They have had to cross the river several times often using rope as a safety line to make their way to the other side. This river is the home to black Caimans, which, let’s be honest, is not something you want to come across when waist deep in fast flowing river water. The team has spotted a few on their journey!lucy shepherd – adventurer – 15th of november, 2021
