The government of Guyana this morning signed the much-anticipated contract for the construction of a New Bridge to replace the existing Demerara Harbour Bridge which, Minister Deodat said, has run its course and is about two and a half decades past its useful life.

The historic signing ceremony took place at Nandy Park on the East Bank of Demerara and was attended by Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn, Finance Minister Ashni Singh, Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Guo Haiyan, Education Minister Priya Manickchand, and others.

Construction of the new bridge will be undertaken by China Railway Construction Corporation (International) Limited to the tune of US$260 million.

Deodat said that the construction of the bridge is a proud fulfillment of a PPP/C elections campaign promise prior to the March 2020 elections. The length of the bridge will be 2.65 kilometers, and the width of the driving surface will be 23.6 meters with a total of four driving lanes. There will be cycle lanes on either sides of the bridge. The lifespan of the bridge is an estimated 100 years, and the estimated time of completion is 2 years.

The Publication understands that the bridge will land at Nandy Park on the East Bank of Demerara and Meer Zorgen/La Grange on the West Bank of Demerara.
