A few months ago, we published a story about a single mother of 4 who appealed to the general public for assistance in rebuilding her house which is literally falling apart. The woman, Geeta, is a single mother of 4 kids who does domestic work, and in addition is saddled with the responsibility of giving intensive care to her elderly parents.

The house in which the family lives is broken beyond repair. Water pours down from the roof when it rains, and the floors are about to give away. Further, when it rains heavily, the yard floods and the water comes into the house itself. Geeta explained that she has no relatives or friends on whom she can rely, and does not have the requirements to take out a bank loan for repairs or reconstruction. The situation is indeed dire.

This publication reached out to the general public to assist the family. Kelvin Fortune, a Guyanese public figure, social media personality, and philanthropist, who humorously describes himself as “Selfie Boss,” has risen to the challenge. This afternoon, Mr. Fortune took a three-hour drive from his home in Region 4, Georgetown, Guyana, to Corriverton, Upper Corentyne, Region 6, to visit the family.

Mr. Fortune said he was shocked beyond words at what he saw, and that the situation is even worse than it appeared in the article we published earlier. Mr. Fortune has already embarked on the task of rallying support and raising funds using his personal network to construct a home for Geeta and her family. He says he aims to build a small but decent 2-bedroom concrete flat complete with kitchen, toilet, and bath.

Mr. Kelvin Fortune is well known for his philanthropic works across Guyana. He has already assisted many Guyanese in dire need. We strongly appeal to you to support his new project of constructing a home for Geeta and her family. Full accountability of all funds donated will be given. In the upcoming weeks, we will publish a progress report for donors to see how their money is being spent.
