Flying ahead of 79 other contestants for the prestigious title, India’s Haarnaz Sandhu was last evening (12th of December, 2021) crowned Miss Universe 2021. The celebrated annual event saw its 70th edition on Sunday evening in Eilat, Israel.

The 21-year-old actor and model was crowned on stage by her predecessor, Ms. Andrea Meza of Mexico who had taken home the crown in 2020. She is the third Indian to have been crowned Miss Universe – the last one being 21 years ago.

Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira, 22, and South Africa’s Lalela Mswane, 24, were the first and second runners up respectively. As Ferreira and Sandhu locked hands on the stage awaiting the outcome of the dramatic moment, the two bore a striking physical similarity to each other with similar complexion, auburn half-length hair, and facial features. Miss Paraguay was slightly taller.

As Steve Harvey pronounced the winner, an emotional Haarnaz Sandhu bowed, wept, and was crowned by outgoing Miss Universe, Andrea Meza. Bouquet in hand, she waved gently to the crowd with tears in her eyes as she graced the stage with her first walk as the new Miss Universe 2021.

Haarnaz Kaur Sandhu was born on March 3, 2000 in Guraharsahai, India. She is fluent in Hindi, Punjabi, and English, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Administration.

The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing, is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide. This is what you need to understand. Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that is why I am standing here today.
