On the 20th of April, 2022, a woman by the name Varshanie Cyril, armed with a cutlass, dealt several chops to Ms. Amrita Singh of Port Mourant Settlement, Region 6, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana, South America. Amrita related to this publication that the police did not take her case seriously until a video which was filmed by a resident went viral on social media. The video showed in graphic detail how Varshanie Cyril brazenly attacked and chopped Amrita Singh causing her grievous bodily harm. The attack, as seen from the video, can be interpreted as an attempt to murder.

Nevertheless, despite damning evidence of her involvement in the gruesome act, Varshanie Cyril and her accomplice in the crime were granted bail at the sum of $25,000 each, and the matter is presently ongoing in the court.

On the 5th of April, 2022, Varshanie Cyril crossed Amrita’s path again brandishing a knife and threatening to “ram” the knife into Amrita’s “guts.” Amrita subsequently made a report to the Whim Police Station where the officer in charge of reports, Mr. Seecharran, promised that Varshanie would be arrested and brought to the station for a statement and possible charges. However, no arrest was made up to the evening of April 6. On April 6, this publication called Mr. Seecharan at Whim Police Station and he told us that an arrest was not made as yet because the patrol van was busy.

However, three weeks later, as of today, 27th of April, 2022, Varshanie Cyril was still not arrested over the alleged threats of violence. This publication called Mr. Seecharran again today, 27th of April, 2022, and he confirmed that no arrests were made “because the patrol ranks are busy.”

Amrita Singh has alleged that the police have been showing partiality to her attacker, Varshanie Cyril, and that the judicial authorities have also been dealing leniently with her attacker. Team Guyana, South America calls on the relevant authorities to pay close attention to this case so as not to pervert the course of justice.
