The house collapsed on the 1st of August, 2021 due to heavy rainfall and storms. The owners of the abandoned house now reside overseas.
Ms. Roopdai Latchman, of 202 Section B, Bloomfield Village, Corentyne, Berbice, reported to this publication that she is frustrated that the owners of the house have bluntly refused to assist in removing the structure and compensating her for damages done to her property. Further, she relates that she spoke to several authorities such as the NDC and the sanitary, and no one has stepped up to assist her.
The young woman related that she, along with her sisters and other relatives, have contacted the owners of the house, who now resides overseas, and asked them to take responsibility for the accident and damages and have it corrected and rectified. The owners, she said, responded in a gruff and rude tone that they will not do anything.
Ms. Latchman, also known as Shirley, expressed that being a single mother of two, she has neither the time nor the financial resources to hire a lawyer to fight this case in court. As such, she is calling on the relevant authorities to intervene and ensure that the owners of the house, who now reside overseas, step up to their legal responsibilities in having the structure removed from her property as well as compensate her for damages done.
