A 21-year old man and his girlfriend have become Guyana’s latest road fatalities after a police chase ended in tragedy. Reports are that the police, at a roadblock in Region 5, stopped the youth who was driving the blue Toyota Allion motor car, PNN 8852, and requested to see documents for the vehicle.

The young man, who has been identified as 21-year old Christopher Bhagwandat, worked as a mechanic at his village of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. He had reportedly just picked up his girlfriend from Berbice to take her to his mother’s birthday celebration in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara when the police flagged him down.

The police said Bhagwandat pulled over towards the side of the road but subsequently drove off suddenly “at a fast rate” raising suspicions and causing the police to raise an alert. A mobile patrol at Mahaica gave chase and unfortunately crashed into the motor car, PNN 8852, near to the Mahaica bridge.

Bhagwandat’s car then crashed into a truck coming in the opposite direction resulting the truck toppling. Four police ranks who were in the pursuing police vehicle are reported to be injured. The young man and his girlfriend were killed in the accident.

CCTV footage shows the police vehicle ramming civilian car into the path of truck. The force of the impact pushed the truck backwards and turned it over several times. (Watch CCTV Footage on Facebook).

Three of the police ranks were referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital while one remained for treatment at the Mahaicony Hospital. Another car involved in the accident was carrying a family of four including two children. They were reportedly treated for minor injuries and discharged. The driver of the canter truck also suffered minor injuries.

Unfortunately, members of the Guyana Police Force are not known to be the most skilled of drivers and police vehicles crashing, plunging into trenches etc, have been a common occurrence. Team Guyana, South America strongly advises the Guyana Police Force to reassess the kind of ranks it entrusts with police vehicles. We further advise all law-abiding Guyanese not to run from the police. Running from the police is likely to result in fatalities or casualties.
